IIL staff visited Elenger's Vinni biogas plant to see where the fuel that powers our Lääne-Viru county buses comes from.
The raw materials used in the Vinni biogas plant are mostly cow manure, silage residues and urine. We managed to be there just as the raw materials were arriving, and were childlike excited to see the whole production process. The keenest eyes were even able to peer into the digester and the visit to the plant was rounded off with a short walk along the lagoon. The lagoon wasn't light blue, but earthy brown, and it's here that the digestate, the residue from the fermentation process, is stored. Digestate is a high-quality, certified organic fertiliser. Unlike manure, digestate has no odour and does not contain weed seeds. The raw material is usually handed over to the factory free of charge in exchange for a higher quality and more manageable fertiliser. The process is an ideal example of the circular economy.
If you're interested in a more detailed production process answer then read about how green gas is produced: https://rohegaasijaam.ee/kuidas-valmib-rohegaas/
West-Viru County is the first region in the IIL administration to use biomethane on county lines. Biomethane emissions are nearly 10 times lower than fossil liquid fuels. As methane (from the feedstock) is not emitted into the air, the use of green gas is actually hundreds of times better. For example, if natural gas reserves are finite, green gas can be produced forever.
"The situation is shit, but it is the fertiliser of our future," said Lennart Meri - and biogas production is proof of how today's challenges will become tomorrow's growth. The whole process will take place in Estonia, making an important contribution to local entrepreneurship and the waste economy. We will increasingly move towards environmentally sustainable solutions in all future procurement, but we will always choose them according to the specificities and opportunities of the region. In Rakvere, the use of gas buses has proven its worth and we will find suitable solutions in other regions.
